💬 Navigating Perspectives
Mohamed Kaleemulla, a 72-year-old retired social science teacher, embodies a rare dedication to preserving Karnataka's rich cultural heritage. His journey began with a simple observation: the neglected Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple in Basaralu village, a miniature replica of the famed Belur and Halebidu temples. This discovery ignited a passion within him to explore and protect the architectural treasures scattered across Nagamangala and beyond.
Recognising the Value of Neglected Temples
Kaleemulla's explorations led him to the Channakeshava Swamy Temple in Dodda Jataka village, built by Emperor Krishnadevaraya. He was disheartened to find the temple in a state of disrepair. Drawing a parallel to the Taj Mahal, he recognised the temple's historical and emotional significance, fuelling his determination to restore it to its former glory.
A Community United
Understanding the magnitude of the task, Kaleemulla sought help from the Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Dharmothana Trust. He successfully mobilised the community, convincing residents, including those settled in Bengaluru, to contribute towards the restoration efforts. His persistence and persuasive skills transformed the dilapidated temple into a renewed symbol of cultural pride.
Beyond Temples
Kaleemulla's commitment extends beyond temples to include the preservation of "veeragallus" (hero stones) and inscriptions. He rescues these historical markers from neglect, often found discarded or misused, and erects them in prominent locations, educating locals about their significance. He emphasises the importance of honouring the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for their community.
Sharing the Past with Future Generations
Having travelled extensively across India to immerse himself in its diverse history and culture, Kaleemulla laments the lack of awareness among young people about their local heritage. He hopes his efforts will inspire future generations to appreciate and protect the invaluable historical and architectural treasures that surround them. His work serves as a powerful reminder that preserving the past is essential for understanding and enriching the present.
