💬 Navigating Perspectives
For centuries, the Yazh, a harp-like string instrument favoured by Tamil kings, existed only in history books and museum displays. But in a small Chennai workshop, Tharun Sekar, founder of Uru Instruments, is meticulously resurrecting this 2000-year-old instrument, breathing new life into Tamil Nadu's rich musical heritage.
A Quest for Roots
Tharun's journey began with a simple question: why weren't India's traditional instruments reaching a global audience? Driven by a desire to modernise and market these instruments, he founded Uru Instruments in 2019. The Yazh became his focus after a friend's suggestion, sparking a deep dive into ancient Tamil literature to understand the instrument's design and sound.
History
With scant information available, Tharun turned to classical Tamil works like Silapathikaram and Tholkappiyam, interpreting poetic metaphors to reconstruct the Yazh. Phrases like "The sound of Yazh was like honey" offered clues to its structure and resonance. Comparing it to similar instruments like the Greek Lyre and Burmese Harp, he meticulously crafted a playable Yazh, blending historical accuracy with modern usability.
Taking it Global
Uru Instruments has sold around 80 instruments, with a remarkable 95% of sales coming from outside India. Musicians worldwide are embracing the Yazh, with notable artists like Ganavya incorporating it into their performances. Despite reinvesting most earnings into research and development, Tharun's dedication is clear. Each Yazh is handcrafted, a labor-intensive process that can take months or even years to complete.
Tamil Orchestra
Tharun's passion extends beyond instrument-making. He formed Uru Paanar, an eight-member band dedicated to exploring the sounds of Tamil instruments. Their upcoming album, inspired by Tholkappiyam, promises to be a unique auditory experience, recorded live to capture the authenticity of these ancient sounds.
Reviving Legacy
Tharun Sekar's work is more than just instrument-making; it's a cultural revival. By resurrecting the Yazh and other traditional instruments, he's preserving India's musical heritage and sharing it with the world. His vision extends to uncovering and promoting instruments from every state in India, ensuring that these treasures are never forgotten.
