Advocate of Daughters and Women’s Rights Abuses
In this issue, we aim to share heartwarming narratives of people who have made a difference in the society. Sunil Jaglan, became an advocate for the same cause when he welcomed his daughter. He started campaigns such as the ‘Selfie with Daughter’ campaign aimed at combating gender inequality. Sanjeeva Suvarna, a Yakshagana dance practitioner, has been to 52 countries, and has worked on the reinvention of this unique Indian form of Art. Hence the practice of his art exists due to the use of foreign agents in countries that do not fully adhere to his regional art but making it global. Dr. Kandasami Saravanan worked as a soil scientist and abandoned his profession to start farming, mostly focusing on moringa and its processed items for the markets. Kalpana Sankar, who founded Hand in Hand India, is bringing financial services to the underprivileged in Tamil Nadu by providing savings and loan facilities to them.

Sunil Jaglan: An Advocate of Daughters and Women’s Rights Abuses
Sunil Jaglan’s life changed forever the day his daughter was born, which later motivated him to fight against the evils of female foeticide in his state, Haryana. As a man, he valued men above women and would do nothing to help the society of women. Still, now he promotes the empowerment of women, created one of the first women’s gram sabhas in India, and the initiatives like ‘Selfie With Daughter’ campaign which praises girls. His efforts have brought changes to the village sex ratio and families have also started accepting girls in the families. Jaglan is breaking down the walls of patriarchy through the use of education and awareness. In turn such a culture promotes rejoicing the birth of a girl rather than viewing it as a burden, hence bringing forth a progressive society.

To enrich the art with some world outlook, Yakshagana artist and instructor (Teacher – Educationist) Sanjeeva Suvarna has travelled to 52 countries. His style is intricate featuring strong facial expressions, accurate steps and a profound understanding of the Indian epics. Modernization and integration of several art forms are making sure that the age-old dance drama of Yakshagana reaches an international level. Recently, the artists from different nations came together to perform this fascinating art form – a traditional art infused with modernism. The aim is to embrace Yakshagana culture and cross borders in order in cultures, enhance appreciation while ensuring audiences of all the variations of the cultures enjoyed are able to experience Yakshagana. Excitement was also expressed by the performers who looked forward to taking their art to other places and platforms and urged the young people to participate in the art. The local tradition has mixed with global traditions and improvements, creating a favorable environment for Yakshagana to develop even further and promote the Indian culture across the globe.
From Research to Agriculture
To say the least, Dr. Kandasami Saravanan was a soil scientist, until he quit Tamil Nadu Agriculture University to take up farming fulltime. Now he has turned farmer cultivating moringa in four acres and instead concentrates on the leaves which are more profitable as opposed to drumsticks. This has seen him earn a fortune as he ventured into foreign markets by processing the leaves and selling powders and soups among other products. Led by their father, the children learn not only to cultivate and grow organic vegetables and other food products for their family, but also use sustainable strategies and low-external input farming methods to marry modern and traditional agriculture whilst encouraging responsible farming that is conscious of the environment and socially uplifting.
