💬 Navigating Perspectives
Zydus Lifesciences Limited is embarking on a groundbreaking mission to develop the world's first combination vaccine against shigellosis and typhoid. Supported by the Gates Foundation, this initiative underscores India’s growing prowess in vaccine innovation and its commitment to addressing critical global health challenges. The project, set to commence in March 2025, aims to protect vulnerable children under the age of five from these life-threatening enteric diseases, which are particularly prevalent in endemic regions.
Addressing a Critical Unmet Need
Typhoid and shigellosis pose a significant global health burden, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella bacteria, affects an estimated 11-21 million people each year, leading to 135,000-230,000 deaths. Shigellosis, a diarrheal disease caused by Shigella bacteria, is the second-leading cause of diarrheal mortality, resulting in approximately 212,000 deaths annually. Recognising the severity of these diseases, Zydus is leveraging its expertise in vaccine development to create a solution that offers dual protection.
Collaboration and Innovation at the Forefront
Zydus will collaborate with a partner, utilising its WHO-pre qualified Typhoid conjugate vaccine (ZyVacTM TCV) and a Shigella vaccine from its partner to create the combination vaccine. This strategic collaboration highlights the importance of partnerships in advancing scientific innovation and accelerating the development of impact vaccines. By combining vaccines, Zydus aims to streamline childhood immunisation schedules, making them more sustainable and cost-effective.
A Promising Future for Global Health
The development of a TCV-Shigella combination vaccine holds immense promise for improving global health outcomes. By safeguarding children against these two lethal enteric diseases, Zydus's initiative has the potential to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality rates, particularly in areas where both diseases are endemic. This innovative approach aligns with the WHO's recognition of Shigella as a priority pathogen for vaccine research and development, paving the way for a healthier future for children worldwide.
