💬 Navigating Perspectives
The ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has drawn millions of pilgrims seeking spiritual purification through a sacred dip in the Ganga. However, recent reports reveal alarming levels of pollution in the river water, raising serious concerns about the safety of this revered ritual.
Worrying Water Quality Reports
Recent findings from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) indicate that the water quality at Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, is unfit for bathing. The CPCB highlighted that faecal coli form levels exceeded acceptable limits across multiple monitoring locations during the Kumbh. Specifically, the water quality did not conform to primary standards for bathing due to high faecal coli form and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) levels.
As of February 19, 2025, BOD levels at Sangam were recorded at 5.29 mg/L, significantly above the safe threshold of 3 mg/L for bathing. This situation is compounded by the fact that over 54 crore devotees have already bathed in these waters since the Kumbh began on January 13, prompting fears about public health risks associated with such high contamination levels.
The Impact of Pilgrimage on River Health
The sheer volume of pilgrims—estimated at up to one crore at peak times—generates substantial waste. Daily activities contribute approximately 16 million litres of faecal waste and 240 million litres of greywater to the river. This influx exacerbates existing pollution levels and challenges any mitigation efforts undertaken by authorities.
Environmental advocates have called for more stringent measures to protect the Ganga from contamination during religious gatherings. Critics argue that while local governments make improvements, they fail to address fundamental issues related to sewage management and river health comprehensively.
A Call for Sustainable Practices
The Maha Kumbh Mela serves as a vital cultural and religious event for millions; however, it must not come at the cost of public health or environmental degradation. As authorities grapple with ensuring safe bathing conditions amidst rising pollution levels, there is an urgent need for sustainable practices that prioritise both spiritual and ecological well-being. Only through concerted efforts can we hope to preserve the sanctity of such sacred waters for future generations while safeguarding public health today.
